Operating Native Instruments Battery 3 is a fast and intuitive process. Select an individual cell or multiple cells and all the associated sound parameters are displayed in the lower section of the interface. A vast array of settings can be changed quickly and easily: filter, compressor, pan, pitch, outputs, modulations, envelopes and the list goes on. Alter these settings and you can hear, and see, the effects in real-time. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Variable Cell Matrix Native Instruments Battery 3's intuitive interface truly is a case of plug and play. Simply arrange your drums in up to a total of 128 sample cells and create whole new drum kits in a matter of seconds. Rearrange the sample cells or customize the cell matrix itself: Up to 8 rows with between 4 and 16 sample cells per row ensure your drum kit is presented in the most economic and practical manner. A real space saver. The small triangle button just below the bottom right-hand corner of the cell matrix toggles the Edit Pane on and off - saving still more screen space. Native Instruments Battery 3 - The Sample Cells and Drum Cells Mute, solo and adjust key parameters for individual sample cells, groups of sample cells or entire rows and columns of sample cells. The "Cell" panel in the Edit Pane displays all relevant information with respect to the basic MIDI information, voice groups, key range, name and similar parameter settings for the currently selected sample cell or group of sample cells. Right clicking (ctrl-click) on a sample cell calls up a context menu, allowing you to load samples into the sample cell, copy and paste, re-arrange, save sample cells and more. You also have the option of browsing through the drum cell library and choosing from a huge selection of over 2500 drum cells – specialized drum sounds that are based on multiple drum samples and specific parameter settings. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Edit Pane The edit pane allows further editing of individual samples or entire drum cells. Drum sounds can be finely edited using the mapping and sample editors and the drum cell setup page allows articulations and the like to be added. An effects section for each individual sample cell plus a master effects section for the full drum kit ensure you find just the right sound and tonality. The browser affords easy access to samples, cells and entire kits. Third party sample formats such as Apple Loops, REX, Akai, EXS and many more can of course be imported, guaranteeing Native Instruments Battery 3's compatibility with just about every drum sample available. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Kit Management Use the kit management tool to quickly load and save entire drum kits. The library's "Fast Load" menu browses the kits located in the Native Instruments Battery 3 library folder. Use this menu or the "Next" and "Previous" buttons to quickly navigate through the entire kit library. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Articulations Native Instruments Battery 3 is the first sampler that includes a set of advanced articulations and performance features, making your drum tracks more realistic than ever before. The articulations include drum rudiments and playing styles that add a truly individual touch. Cell setup and humanize make over quantized tracks sound far more authentic and the MIDI Echo adds a further creative dimension to each separate cell. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Drum Rudiments The articulation section includes 10 different drum rudiments that make Native Instruments Battery 3 a world-class drummer. Each articulation has its own set of parameters that can be varied to suit your style. Flam, drag, roll, buzz, three stroke ruff, speed roll, muted, alternate and release stroke and the Geiger Counter all add that essential, realistic touch to your drums, that normally only a drummer could provide. Native Instruments Battery 3 - MIDI Echo and Humanize The MIDI Echo repeats the MIDI in note, either based on a fixed time or synced to the host or master tempo. Gravity slows down the time and tune changes the pitch of each repeated note. The combination of these two effects gives extra depth to your cells or entire kits and offers exiting new possibilities Native Instruments Battery 3 - Velocity, Input Quantize and Cell Setup Using the voice and choke groups adds a more natural feel to hi-hats. The cell activation with cycle round robin or cycle random will automatically switch between different samples or cells. Adjust the velocity per cell to fit you input interface (keyboard or drum controller) and use the input quantize to adjust the note on of a cell based on a time grid. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Sound Shaping Native Instruments Battery 3 is armed with an arsenal of powerful and flexible effects. Dedicated multi-mode filters, equalizer, compressor, lo-fi, saturator and more for each and every cell offer the versatility and quality needed to bring your drums to life. The master effects (equalizer, limiter, compressor, delay and two types or reverb) guarantee your drums a production-ready and cohesive sound. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Master Effects Don't want the headache of having to deal with extra plug-ins or additional effects? Just use Native Instruments Battery 3's internal limiter, compressor, equalizer to master your kit for final production. Or add a tempo synced stereo delay with individual send levels per cell. The integrated reverb effect has two modes: one algorithmic reverb and a convolution-based reverb for a more authentic sound. You can even drag samples directly from the matrix onto the convolution display and load it as an impulse. For example, try dragging a snare sample onto the convolution display and listen to how a full drum kit sounds when played through a snare. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Cell Effects - Flexible Filters: Each sample cell has a dedicated, multi-mode filter section including presets that have been optimized specifically for drum sounds. Use the 16 individual types of filters and eq’s to tweak each individual drum hit and achieve the precise sound needed, giving your productions the creative edge. Link filter parameters to the modulation section to obtain some dynamic, constantly changing results. The filter cut-off and resonance parameters, for instance, are particularly well suited as modulation destinations.
- Powerful Compressor: Beef up your sound. Included in BATTERY 3 is one powerful compressor per sample cell allowing you to control and manipulate the dynamic range, making sure that every individual drum sample packs just the right punch. Try using the bypass switch to compare the compressed and non-compressed sound; you will often find that just a small amount of compression will result in a fat sound without it being over-powering.
Native Instruments Battery 3 - Saturation, Bit Reduction, Re-Sampling Effect... This module affects any selected cells, and provides a broad range of modifications. - Tune: changes the pitch of the selected cell. The range of three octaves up or down allow for some serious sound design effetcs.
- Saturation: can give a sound a lot more punch and attack. Negative saturation can also be set, allowing it to work much like an expander.
- Bits: allows for some retro, lo-fi sounds. Sets the bit resolution between 1 and 16 bits. Emulate the old school digital equipment or try out some "sci-fi fractional" bit reduction.
- Hertz: is another outstanding candidate to be used as a modualtion destination. Hertz sets the sample rate bewteeen 15.8KHz and 1KHz, achieving some clangy, metallic sound effects.
Native Instruments Battery 3 - Sound Editing Native Instruments Battery 3 - Wave Editor The graphical wave editor lets you edit your sounds in minute detail (down to the single sample level). Cut, copy, paste, normalize, reverse and more - adjust the sounds fit to your exact needs. Or use the wave editor to experiment with the samples while just editing parts of the waveform. If you are not happy with the changes you make, simply click the “original” button and the sample is returned to its original state. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Looped Samples The Loop section adds an important effect to Native Instruments Battery 3: the ability to loop a section of the sample. You can choose up to four sections to loop as well as the number of times each section is repeated. This feature allows Native Instruments Battery 3 to extend percussion sampling beyond mere "one-shot" sample playback into sustained sounds. Let the sample evolve over time and be further modified by envelopes adding an even greater dynamic element to the sound. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Mapping The graphical mapping editor offers an intuitive way to load samples and arrange them on the different velocity layers within a sample cell. In the map view, samples display additional parameters defining how they are triggered and crossfaded etc, particularly realistic drum cells dynamics, for example, respond to the way in which they are being played. Tune, volume and pan can be adjusted individually per sample, so that smooth transitions are ensured. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Automate and Modulate Give your rhythm section a life of its own. The sophisticated modulation features in BATTERY 2 offer the potential to keep your drum tracks dynamic by adding constant yet subtle changes to the way in which the samples are played. Use the integrated, freely assignable LFOs, envelopes and other sources to modulate up to 8 destinations per cell simultaneously. Manipulate the velocity, key position, pitchbend, aftertouch, release velocity, volume envelopes, pan, pitch sample start and a whole host of other parameters for every individual hit. Witness endless variations in the sounds and rhythms - lend your drums and percussion a truly human touch. As these modulation sources can also be MIDI controllers, it's possible to feed signals from external hardware MIDI fader boxes and manipulate the sound as a real-time performance. Alternatively you can use the automation feature in plug-in mode to record automation data for later playback. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Loop Machine Native Instruments Battery 3 - Preview and Import Native Instruments Battery 3 can now be used as loop production machine. You can preview beat loops synced to the master or host tempo directly within the browser: simply select the loop file and enable the sync option. Finding a loop that fits perfectly into your song has never been easier. Importing sliced loops can be done in one of two different ways: - Drag and drop a loop onto a cell and play back the whole loop synced to host tempo
- Import all slices of a loop into separate cells. This method allows you to adjust the character of each slice individually and edit the rhythm itself.
Native Instruments Battery 3 - Stay in Sync While all loops can be synced within the browser preview and after importing, it doesn't stop there. Native Instruments Battery 3 is also able to sync the LFOs, the MIDI echo and delay effect, so that even after changing the master tempo everything stays in sync with your song. If you want to experiment with these sync settings, you can also change the signature or set each individual loop to double or half speed. The input quantize and retrigger functions also lend themselves particularly well to being used in a live context. Input quantize set every MIDI "note on" to the next bar, quarter or half note, depending on your setting. You can even quantize the length of each note and retrigger a cell. This feature in combination with the latch function, which keeps a note playing until you retrigger the same key, makes Native Instruments Battery 3 the perfect loop machine for live playback. Native Instruments Battery 3 - Four to the Floor While most other samplers only support one beat loop format, Native Instruments Battery 3 supports all 4 major formats, granting you access to a universe of loops from other sound manufacturers.
